Adam Otlewski, a lighting and furniture designer who works from an industrial studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, spends a lot of time in museums, “thinking about how things are made,” as he says. “Primarily I’m interested in decorative arts, an admittedly unfashionable term in an era of products and commerce.”
In his work he aims to “leave my hand visible in every object I make, instead of aiming for a factory-made appearance. I use materials and techniques that promote subtle variances, such as hand-dyed leather or acid-rubbed patina solutions on polished metal. Not always immediately obvious, these choices aim to give depth and character to otherwise pure geometry.”
We especially like his Series 02 lamp, a simple brass cylinder available in two finishes (patinated or polished) and with a hand-stitched goatskin parchment lamp shade.
